Material Offset (CAD does not match part)

I work in additive manufacturing and Ive been asked to check a part that we have not machined yet. We have CAD data but its the finished machined data. We have added .040" of stock to the part to allow for machining operations. There was some unwelcome shrinking involved and my task is to see if we still have enough stock to machine the part. There are no surfaces on the part without this added stock.

To do this, and check it with data that doesn't quite match the part I am assuming is to use the ''thickness'' field in the surface point auto feature dialogue box and input .040" (positive number) for all points probed in the alignment. Once the alignment is done....then delete any entry in the thickness field and take surface points and report the T value.

Is this a method that sounds correct?
