Report overall height/ distance from fixture

Using PC DMIS CAD 2016

I want to report the overall height of a part, without taking hits on my fixture. I have imported an external alignment that is off the fixture. I take manual hits on the top plane when starting my alignment to the part. So, I feel like the needed information is there, but if I recall the external alignment, switch to a Y minus workplane, and try to create a distance dimension, parallel to the Z axis from the manual plane, I can't figure out how to get that distance from the Z origin used in that alignment. Do I need to construct a plane at that Z zero somehow? Or do I need to just take hits on the fixture? (The main reason I'd try not to take hits on the fixture is because I don't want the operator to have to put the part in a specific place for this program, which means I don't have control of whether the hits on the fixture plane might hit a bolt hole and create an error.)

& I searched, but may not have known the best terms to use for this. Sorry if it's redundant.
