Suggestions on hole distance/position measurement

Hi everyone

I have something that is relatively simple giving me a little headache. the picture below shows a cross section of a long extrusion. To measure the hole in the side a plane is created for a datum on the bottom of the extrusion (Red line) rotation and origin are controlled by two holes in the underside of the extrusion. I set it all up as per the drawing.

When I measure the hole position, the distance from the hole centre to the plane is reported as shown by the blue line. this is a perpendicular distance in Z. The problem is that they are setting up the machines using the linear dimension, which I cannot accurately report, nor can they accurately use in my opinion.

I am reporting the hole positions out in Z and they are checking with a vernier and complaining they are good. How would you guys go about reporting this hole position relative to the bottom of the extrusion. Is my method of aligning as per the drawing and then simply reporting using a location dimension or linear dimension OK? It seems good enough to me.

I was wondering about taking another plane in the hole surface, aligning to that and then reporting the distance, however this also comes with its own problems I would believe.

Any thoughts?
